Alexandra Swe Wagner (born November 27, 1977) is an American journalist and author. She is the co-host of The Circus on Showtime^[1] and the author of FutureFace: A Family Mystery, an Epic Quest, and the Secret to Belonging (One World/Random House). She is also a contributor for CBS News and a contributing editor at The Atlantic.^[2][3] Previously, she was the anchor of the daytime program Now with Alex Wagner (2011–2015) on MSNBC. From November 2016 until March 2018, she was a TV co-anchor on CBS This Morning Saturday. She has also been a senior editor at The Atlantic magazine since April 2016.^[4]

Alex Wagner was born and raised in Washington, D.C. Her mother, Tin Swe Thant, is an immigrant from Yangon (Rangoon), Myanmar (Burma), who became a naturalized U.S. citizen before attending Swarthmore College.^[5] Her father, Carl Wagner, from Lansing, Iowa, was of Luxembourgish and Irish descent. He was a prominent Democratic Party political consultant who co-chaired Bill Clinton's presidential campaign.^[6][7] She attended Woodrow Wilson High School^[8] and graduated from Brown University in 1999, having studied art history and literature.^[9][10] Wagner was raised Roman Catholic.^[11]

Career[edit]

Wagner has worked as the cultural correspondent for the Center for American Progress.^[12] From 2003 to 2007, she was editor-in-chief of The Fader magazine, covering music and cultural movements from around the world.^[13] She also served as executive director of Not On Our Watch Project, an advocacy organization focused on mass atrocities and human rights violations.^[13]

Wagner then became the White House correspondent for Politics Daily, a political news magazine under AOL News.^[13] She moved to The Huffington Post after it was acquired by AOL.^[14]

As an analyst on MSNBC, Wagner appeared on Countdown with Keith Olbermann and The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell.^[15]

On November 14, 2011, Wagner began hosting Now with Alex Wagner weekdays (originally at noon ET, but later at 4 PM ET).^[16] On July 30, 2015, MSNBC President Phil Griffin announced that the series had been cancelled in an effort to transition the network's daytime programming to more breaking news reporting and less political commentary and opinion. The next day the program aired its final episode. MSNBC later announced that Wagner would host a weekend program, but those plans were later abandoned.

On April 26, 2016, The Atlantic announced that Wagner was leaving MSNBC to join the magazine as a senior editor. In addition to writing for The Atlantic, Wagner would moderate events with AtlanticLIVE and help with developing video and TV projects with The Atlantic Studios.^[4]

In November 2016, Wagner replaced Vinita Nair on CBS This Morning Saturday.^[17] March 17, 2018 was her last appearance on CBS This Morning Saturday as she confirmed she would be leaving that show to co-host The Circus for Showtime, replacing Mark Halperin.^[18] She remains a correspondent for CBS News.

In 2020, Wagner launched a podcast with Crooked Media and Cadence13 that addressed the COVID-19 pandemic.^[19]

In March 2021 Alex filled in for Nicolle Wallace on MSNBC's Deadline: White House.

Political views[edit]

She has described herself as progressive.^[20] On matters involving Israel, she believes that there is an element of 'trepidation that inhibits a robust discussion about Israel in the American media' due to fears of being falsely slurred as an anti-Semite.^[21]

Personal life[edit]

On August 30, 2014, Wagner married former White House nutrition policy advisor and assistant chef Sam Kass in a ceremony held at Blue Hill at Stone Barns, a restaurant in Pocantico Hills, New York.^[22] The wedding was attended by then U.S. President Barack Obama and his family, as Kass is a family friend of the former president.^[22][23] In 2017, Wagner gave birth to their son, Cy.^[24] She gave birth to their second child, Rafael, on April 16, 2019.

President-elect Joe Biden has set up a new Twitter account in anticipation of his swearing in on January 20. The account will receive the official @POTUS once Biden officially becomes the 46th president of the United States.

Biden launched @PresElectBiden on Thursday—just six days before the inauguration—amid an ongoing conflict with Twitter about handing over @POTUS and @WhiteHouse.

'Folks — This will be the account for my official duties as President. At 12:01 PM on January 20th, it will become @POTUS. Until then, I'll be using @JoeBiden,' the new account tweeted.

That's the only tweet the account has sent so far. It had garnered over 838,000 followers by the time of writing, far short of the 33 million following the current @POTUS account.

Twitter plans to hand over the official handles to the Biden administration on January 20, but the current @POTUS and @WhiteHouse accounts will be archived, leaving the new administration to start with zero followers.

The social media company did not do this in 2017 when the Trump administration took over the accounts and the decision has been a source of tension between Twitter and the Biden transition team.

@POTUS and @WhiteHouse have a combined following of around 60 million, with some overlap, and resetting the follower numbers could make it difficult for the incoming administration to have the same reach on Twitter.

'They are advantaging President Trump's first days of the administration over ours,' said Rob Flaherty, digital director of Biden's transition. He will be White House director of digital strategy after January 20.

'If we don't end the day with the 12 million followers that Donald Trump inherited from Barack Obama, then they have given us less than they gave Donald Trump, and that is a failure.'

The new account's aim is to allow Biden to build up a following before taking over @POTUS, though there is limited time for him to do so. President Donald Trump's personal account had 88 million followers before its permanent suspension.

'As we did in 2017, Twitter is actively working with the US government to support the transition of Twitter accounts across administrations, so that the incoming Biden administration will have access to institutional White House Twitter accounts,' a Twitter spokesperson told Newsweek on Saturday.

'The accounts will not automatically retain their existing followers. Instead, Twitter will notify followers of these accounts to provide context that the content will be archived and allow them the choice to follow the Biden administration's new accounts. For example, people who follow @WhiteHouse will be notified that the account has been archived as @WhiteHouse45 and given the option to follow the new @WhiteHouse account.'

Flaherty explained his reasoning further on Twitter on Friday, saying that the presidential Twitter account is 'a public good' and that a lot of normal people follow it.

'Sure, plenty of rando bots and trolls, but also, plenty of folks who don't really engage in politics. Plenty of hate follows. Who knows! It's why Twitter moved the followers over from Obama to Trump! It's not a political account, it's the President's account,' he wrote.

'Anyway, the nice thing about Joe Biden is that he truly couldn't care less about Twitter followers. Or Twitter! But he does care about communicating with everyone in the country, whether they agree with him or not,' Flaherty said.
