Spyro Reignited Trilogy was a popular game when it released last year, as it successfully brought the classic platformers to modern platforms with significantly improved visuals and other enhancements. However, there was some controversy when it was discovered that the physical disc version of Spyro Reignited Trilogy only actually included the first game on the disc, with Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage and Year of the Dragon requiring a day one update. Essentially, this meant Spyro Reignited Trilogy players without Internet access were unable to access two-thirds of the collection. Now that Spyro Reignited Trilogy is coming to the Switch, it seems like nothing's changed, and the game still requires an update if players want to play the entire collection.

This was reported by Reddit user Aufinator, who purchased a copy of Spyro Reignited Trilogy on Switch in Indonesia, where it is being sold early. Aufinator, providing images to back up their claims, has confirmed that the physical cartridge version of Spyro Reignited Trilogy on Switch requires an 8.7GB download.

While some may not be bothered by this, it's worth pointing out that requiring an 8.7GB update for the Switch version of Spyro Reignited Trilogy may be even more inconvenient than it was on other platforms. The Switch's internal storage is a far cry from the internal hard drive space offered by the PS4 and Xbox One, so part of the appeal of buying physical games is to save space for digital titles. By making players download an update even when they buy the physical version of Spyro Reignited Trilogy, Activision is taking that benefit out of the equation.

The update aside, Spyro Reignited Trilogy should still be a quality game on the Switch. In our Spyro Reignited Trilogy review, we praised the game for successfully updating the classic Spyro the Dragon trilogy for modern audiences, though noted that some aspects of the game design haven't aged all that well.

Presumably, Spyro Reignited Trilogy will provide a near-identical experience on the Switch as the other versions of the game. This means that players will still have three critically-acclaimed platformers play through, all of which have had their graphics dramatically upgraded. The download requirement is still a bummer, but those who can see past it are still likely to enjoy themselves.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy is out now for PS4 and Xbox One, with the Nintendo Switch version launching on September 3.

About The Author

Nintendo and Xbox have become increasingly close over recent years, starting with the two companies working together to pioneer console cross-play in 2018. Now, after hints dropped from both sides, many fans think that another collaboration between Nintendo and Xbox is coming, but it apparently won't be Xbox Cloud Gaming on Switch.

Xbox Cloud Gaming is part of the Xbox Game Pass program that allows players to play certain games entirely through the cloud. While currently available on Android phones, Xbox Cloud Gaming is coming to iOS and PC as well, leading some to theorize that the service could make its way to the Nintendo Switch.

The possibility of this is not as unlikely as it may immediately seem. Firstly, Xbox has been very open about wanting to expand its Xbox Game Pass program as much as possible, with even Valve reportedly trying to convince Xbox to put the program on Steam. Secondly, the Switch already has cloud gaming capability as some new releases, such as Hitman 3 use cloud streaming to run on the less powerful console. Unfortunately, games industry analyst David Gibson says that somebody at Nintendo flat out told him that it wouldn't even consider letting Xbox Cloud Gaming make the jump to the Switch. David Gibson is a very well-known analyst who has various connections throughout the industry, so his claim is likely accurate.

Would make a lot of sense @MatPiscatella , but I have had @Nintendo tell me directly they would not put other streaming services on the Switch. Lost opportunity...... https://t.co/Qbs97Z2Ugn

— David Gibson (@gibbogame) April 21, 2021

The Tweet comes as a response to Mat Piscatella, the executive director for The NPD Group, a market research company. Piscatella was musing about how much sense the move would make for both companies, as it would help Nintendo increase the library on the console with the sizable Xbox Game Pass library while also allowing Xbox to get access to millions of more consumers. Unfortunately, Gibson already considers the idea a lost opportunity, meaning if his sources are accurate it likely isn't going to happen anytime soon.

The news will likely come as a disappointment to many Xbox and Nintendo fans, and it does seem like a missed opportunity for a great new addition to both companies' offerings. If this possible explanation for the hinted at Xbox and Nintendo collaboration really is false, it does beg the question of just what the two companies could be planning. There are many theories out there, including the addition of Master Chief to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and hopefully, with the approaching summer of game events and conferences, something will be announced soon.
